Boosting Green Hydrogen Production in Kakinada with New ISTS Scheme
Key Ideas
- The National Committee on Transmission has approved an ISTS scheme in Kakinada for green hydrogen/ammonia plants, aiming to meet a projected 6,000 MW demand by 2030.
- The scheme involves constructing a new substation, introducing STATCOM and MSC technologies, and linking to existing transmission lines to facilitate RE power supply.
- The development is part of a larger initiative to boost green hydrogen production in India, with similar projects in Gujarat and Tuticorin also in progress.
- The Kakinada substation will be designed as per recommendations for cyclone-resilient infrastructure, ensuring durability against coastal weather conditions.
The National Committee on Transmission (NCT) in India has given the green light to an interstate transmission system (ISTS) scheme in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, aimed at supporting upcoming green hydrogen and ammonia plants in the region. The project, known as 'Transmission system for proposed green hydrogen/green ammonia projects in Kakinada area (Phase-I),' is estimated to cost Rs.1,618.50 crore and is set to be completed within 24 months from the SPV transfer date. The scheme, sanctioned under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) route, will be overseen by PFC Consulting Ltd (PFCCL). The key components of the scheme include a new substation, LILO of an existing transmission line, and the installation of advanced STATCOM and MSC technologies. The initiative comes in response to the expected surge in demand for green hydrogen and ammonia in Kakinada, with one company alone seeking 700 MW connectivity by 2026 and 1,300 MW by 2027. Additionally, the development aligns with recommendations for cyclone-resilient infrastructure, ensuring the new substation's robustness against coastal weather conditions. This project is part of a broader national effort to promote green hydrogen production, with similar schemes underway in Gujarat and Tuticorin. The growing focus on green projects and renewable energy sources signifies a positive step towards sustainable development in the country.
