The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, oversaw the signing of three agreements aimed at developing plants of the Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemicals Industries Company (AFC) in Egypt. These agreements focus on enhancing sustainability and reducing carbon emissions to align with European standards, specifically through the application of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The first agreement, signed by AFC's Chairman & Managing Director and the CEO of the American MPS, focuses on supplying green hydrogen through water electrolysis units powered by renewable energy to partially replace natural gas in the production process. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce natural gas consumption and carbon emissions, helping Abu Qir Fertilizers comply with EU emissions standards and the CBAM. The second agreement, involving the ABB Group, aims to set up an updated electronic control system at the Ammonia plant to enhance energy efficiency and reduce gas consumption. These projects are seen as crucial in solidifying the company's position in the nitrogen fertilizer sector while promoting sustainability and enhancing product competitiveness in the global market. By embracing green technologies and energy-efficient solutions, Abu Qir Fertilizers is not only showing dedication to adopting global best practices but also aiming to contribute to the national economy and elevate the competitiveness of Egyptian products on the international stage.
