At the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Summit 2025 in Davos, Malaysia's Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, announced that Fortescue, a global metal mining company, has agreed to invest in green hydrogen alternative energy in Bintulu, Sarawak. This significant agreement was reached through a meeting with Fortescue's leadership team led by executive chairman Andrew Forrest AO. Anwar highlighted that the Sarawak government has agreed in principle, and he has provided guarantees of incentives and support to establish Bintulu as a hub for green hydrogen. The Prime Minister also led a Malaysian delegation in face-to-face business meetings with companies like AstraZeneca, DP World, Medtronics, Nestle, and Google. Notably, DP World's investment in Sepanggar, Sabah, received support from the Federal Government, signaling a positive outlook for economic development in the region. Discussions with Google revealed plans for major programs in Malaysia, such as data centers benefiting areas like Johor, Penang, and Perak. Anwar's emphasis on Asean's economic potential, energy transition, and focus on issues like education and digital technology showcased Malaysia's strategic priorities as the regional grouping's chair.
