Fortescue's Green Metal Project Revolutionizes Iron and Steel Production in Western Australia
Key Ideas
  • Fortescue's $50m Green Metal Project in WA's Pilbara region will produce over 1,500t of high-purity green metal annually using green hydrogen and electric smelting.
  • The project includes a green hydrogen plant, a gaseous hydrogen refuelling station, a hydrogen liquefaction facility, and prototypes for zero-emissions decarbonisation.
  • Fortescue's initiative aims to revolutionize steel production processes, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and establish a green metal supply chain in Australia.
  • The company's Chairman, Dr Andrew Forrest, emphasized the significance of innovation, collaboration, and green industry development for a sustainable future.
Fortescue, a major mining company, has launched its $50 million Green Metal Project at the Christmas Creek site in Western Australia's Pilbara region. This innovative project is set to revolutionize iron and steel production by focusing on green and sustainable practices. The plant will have a green metal production capacity of over 1,500 tons annually, utilizing green hydrogen from Fortescue's hydrogen facility and an electric smelting furnace to create high-purity green metal. Additionally, the project includes a green hydrogen plant that can produce 530kg of hydrogen gas daily, supported by a gaseous hydrogen refuelling station for hydrogen-driven fuel cell electric coaches. This initiative is part of Fortescue's efforts towards decarbonisation, featuring prototypes for zero-emissions technologies such as a liquid hydrogen plant, hydrogen-powered haul trucks, battery-electric haul trucks, and fast chargers. Dr Andrew Forrest, Fortescue's executive chairman, highlighted the significance of this project in reshaping the iron and steel industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and establish a green metal supply chain in Australia. The project signifies a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, aiming to create a new, environmentally friendly industry in the country.
