Germany's First Floating Hydrogen Import Terminal in Lubmin
Key Ideas
  • Deutsche ReGas and Hoegh LNG have partnered to develop the world's first floating import terminal for green hydrogen production in Lubmin, Germany.
  • The terminal, expected to be operational from early 2026, aims to convert green ammonia to green hydrogen on an industrial scale, producing 30,000 tons annually.
  • The collaboration between the two companies includes Hoegh LNG's innovative green ammonia cracker technology for decarbonization, as part of Germany's energy transition strategy.
  • The project, led by Deutsche ReGas, will utilize existing infrastructure and expertise to facilitate the import of cost-competitive hydrogen for industrial decarbonization in Germany.
German LNG terminal operator Deutsche ReGas and Norwegian FSRU player Hoegh LNG have entered into an agreement to develop a floating hydrogen import terminal in the port of Lubmin, Germany. The project, named 'H2-Import-Terminal Lubmin,' will be the world's first floating import terminal for the large-scale conversion of green ammonia to green hydrogen. Deutsche ReGas anticipates the facility to commence operations in early 2026, producing approximately 30,000 tons of hydrogen annually. The initiative will leverage Hoegh LNG's green ammonia cracker technology to support the decarbonization efforts in Germany's industrial regions. Deutsche ReGas will oversee the onshore terminal infrastructure, project coordination, permitting, and import capacity marketing. This collaboration signifies a crucial milestone in Germany's energy transition strategy and aims to contribute to the decarbonization of eastern and southern industrial areas. Hoegh LNG's CEO highlighted the importance of hydrogen importation for achieving industrial decarbonization and emphasized the utilization of existing marine infrastructure for cost-effective hydrogen supply. The project reflects a significant advancement in green energy infrastructure development and showcases a promising partnership for sustainable energy solutions.
