The HyIron plant, located in Namibia, was inaugurated as Africa's first zero-emissions iron production facility. The ceremony was attended by key figures including Namibia's President, EU Ambassador, German Ambassador, and Namibian Minister of Industries, Mines, and Energy. This facility, operated by a consortium of German and Namibian companies, is powered by green hydrogen technology and features the largest electrolyser in Southern Africa. At full capacity, the plant is expected to produce two million tonnes of green iron annually and cut 3.6 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions, emphasizing its sustainability impact. Additionally, the project will create over 6,000 jobs, contributing to local economic development. The HyIron plant is a symbol of Namibia's potential to attract investments in clean energy and drive the green transition in Africa. Supported by the EU's Global Gateway initiative, along with contributions from Germany and upcoming support from the Netherlands, the project showcases international collaboration in promoting renewable energy solutions. The EU and Germany have already provided significant financial backing for the pilot and upcoming phases of the project, underlining their commitment to sustainable development. Furthermore, the HyIron plant aligns with the 'Scaling up Renewables in Africa' campaign, a global initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of renewable energy in Africa. This campaign, launched in collaboration with Global Citizen and supported by the International Energy Agency, seeks to drive investments and commitments towards expanding access to affordable, clean energy on the continent. The HyIron plant's inauguration represents a significant step towards achieving the campaign's goals and supporting Africa's clean energy transition.
