India's Push for Green Hydrogen Production: SECI Invites Bids Under SIGHT Scheme
Key Ideas
  • SECI in India has invited bids for green hydrogen production under the SIGHT Scheme aiming to advance technology and reduce costs.
  • The selected Green Hydrogen Producer will establish production facilities to produce 450,000 MT per annum of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
  • Bidders can choose from Technology Agnostic or Biomass Based Pathways, with specific capacity requirements and financial criteria to meet.
  • The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has also issued guidelines for incentive disbursement to encourage green hydrogen production in India.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has launched a significant initiative by inviting bids for green hydrogen production in India under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Scheme. The bidding process involves setting up production facilities for green hydrogen and its derivatives, aiming to scale up production, advance technology, and drive down costs in the green hydrogen sector. The scheme offers two pathways for producers to choose from: Technology Agnostic Pathways and Biomass Based Pathways, each with specific capacity requirements and financial criteria. The selected Green Hydrogen Producer (GHP) will have the responsibility to establish production facilities with a total capacity of 450,000 metric tons per annum of green hydrogen. Bidders are required to submit bids in multiples of 500 MT/annum, ensuring a constant quoted capacity for the first three years of commercial production. The locations for setting up the production facilities are at the discretion of the producer, who must also submit regular progress reports to SECI. Furthermore, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has introduced guidelines for incentive disbursement to support green hydrogen production, aiming to incentivize up to 450,000 metric tons per annum of green hydrogen production under Component II of the SIGHT program. This move is expected to encourage more participation in the green hydrogen sector in India, promoting sustainability and technological innovation in the renewable energy landscape.
