India's Strategic Move towards Green Hydrogen Independence
Key Ideas
  • Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) issues a Request for Selection (RfS) for Green Ammonia producers as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy.
  • The bidding process for producing 5.39 lakh Metric Tonnes/annum of Green Ammonia will be conducted through e-bidding and e-Reverse Auction, with the ammonia intended for supply to fertilizer companies.
  • The National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to achieve significant decarbonization, reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, and position India as a leader in Green Hydrogen technology and market.
  • This mission, with an outlay of Rs. 19,744 crores, aligns with India's vision of 'Aatmanirbhar' (self-reliant) clean energy, contributing to both domestic energy security and global clean energy transformation.
India has taken a significant step towards boosting the demand for Green Hydrogen by initiating the production of Green Ammonia through the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The Request for Selection (RfS) for Green Ammonia producers falls under the National Green Hydrogen Mission led by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. The objective is to produce 5.39 lakh Metric Tonnes annually of Green Ammonia through a competitive bidding process, ultimately supplying it to fertilizer companies. The Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Program, a part of the mission, aims to incentivize the procurement of Green Ammonia production. The SECI has been assigned the role of implementing agency for this Scheme, which aligns with the broader goals of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The mission has already allocated production and manufacturing capacities for Green Hydrogen and Electrolyzers, demonstrating a comprehensive approach towards promoting clean energy technologies. Launched with a substantial budget of Rs. 19,744 crores, the mission envisions India's self-reliance in clean energy and sets the stage for global leadership in the clean energy transition. By fostering significant decarbonization, reducing dependency on fossil fuel imports, and fostering technology and market leadership, the mission paves the way for a more sustainable and economically robust energy future for India.
