Massive 70 GW Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen Project Proposed for Western Australia Coastline
Key Ideas
- An international consortium has proposed the Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) in Western Australia, consisting of 70 GW of solar and wind generation for green hydrogen production.
- The project aims to generate over 200 TWh of renewable energy annually, supporting both domestic consumption and international green fuel supply.
- WGEH includes solar farms, wind turbines, electrolyzers, data centers, and infrastructure for green hydrogen production and exportation, with a total investment estimated at AUD 100 billion.
- The project is expected to be developed in seven stages, with the first production anticipated around 2032, following a recent collaboration agreement with Korea Electric Power Corp.
An international consortium has proposed the Western Green Energy Hub (WGEH) in Western Australia's Goldfields–Esperance region, aiming to develop a massive 70 GW renewable energy generation and green hydrogen production facility. The consortium, consisting of InterContinental Energy, CWP Global, and Mirning Green Energy, has submitted the project for environmental approval, which includes expanding the initial plan from 50 GW to 70 GW. The project will feature 60 million PV panels across 35 solar farms and 3,000 wind turbines to power electrolyzers for green hydrogen production. Each 'node' of the project will house 2-3 GW of renewable power and a 1.5 GW hydrogen electrolyzer. The developers envision generating over 200 TWh of renewable energy annually, offering opportunities for green fuel supply domestically and internationally. Complementing the energy generation, the project includes infrastructure like data centers, workshops, and a workers' village, and plans for green hydrogen and ammonia exportation. The project, estimated at AUD 100 billion, is planned to be developed in seven stages, with the final investment decision expected in 2029 and production starting around 2032. The recent collaboration with Korea Electric Power Corp. will support the project's development, including a feasibility study for the first stage, which aims to produce 330,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
