Milestone Achievement in Green Ceramics: U.K. Industry's Hydrogen Revolution
Key Ideas
- Ceramics UK achieves a landmark by successfully commissioning a pilot kiln operating on 100% hydrogen, a crucial step towards a sustainable future for the industry.
- The project, supported by 13 ceramic manufacturing companies, demonstrates the sector's commitment to decarbonisation and innovation.
- Funded by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero, this initiative is part of the UK's £1bn Net Zero Innovation Portfolio to support the transition to lower-carbon fuels.
- The successful demonstration of firing ceramic products with hydrogen without compromising quality sets a new standard in the industry's push for greener practices.
Ceramics UK, the trade association for the U.K. ceramics industry, has achieved a significant milestone in its 'Demonstrating Hydrogen in the Ceramics Sector' project. The project's pilot kiln, specially designed to explore the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel for ceramic production, is now operational on 100% hydrogen. This marks a historic breakthrough in the industry, as it is the first time a pilot kiln of this scale has successfully operated entirely on hydrogen fuel. Phase 2 of the project aims to build on the success of Phase 1, which demonstrated the firing of diverse ceramic products using 100% hydrogen without compromising quality. The project, supported by 13 ceramic manufacturing companies, showcases the sector's dedication to decarbonisation. It is conducted in collaboration with Glass Futures at their R&D facility in St Helens. The funding for this initiative was provided by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero through the Industrial Fuel Switching Phase 2 Competition. This funding, part of the £1bn Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, aims to promote innovation in pre-commercial fuel switch technologies to help industries transition to lower-carbon fuels. The successful operation of the pilot kiln on 100% hydrogen and the initiation of member product trials represent a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the U.K. ceramics industry. This achievement sets a new standard in the industry's efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and embrace greener practices.
