The AMETHyST project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund, aims to promote the production and use of green hydrogen in the Alpine regions. Through collaboration between partners from various countries, including Italy, France, Switzerland, and Slovenia, the project focuses on creating 'alpine ecosystems' based on green hydrogen sourced from renewable energy. The project involves conducting technical-economic analyses, providing strategic guidance to local authorities, and fostering the development of policies to implement green hydrogen technologies. Pilot projects include initiatives to replace diesel-powered vehicles with hydrogen-powered ones in ski resorts and utilize surplus electricity from hydroelectric plants for hydrogen production. Despite the positive outcomes, challenges such as regulatory harmonization, safety standards, and the establishment of a market for green hydrogen supply and demand exist. The project aims to address these challenges and contribute to the decarbonization of the Alpine arc. Looking ahead, the project envisions the continuation of efforts beyond its conclusion, emphasizing the importance of feasibility studies and the implementation of green hydrogen technologies at a larger scale. Collaboration and support from the European Union are crucial in facilitating the development of a European market for green hydrogen, connecting producers and users efficiently.
