This agreement marks the initiation of a pilot project for nuclear-connected pink hydrogen production. The collaboration between the two companies will see the establishment of a demonstration plant to validate the commercial model for producing hydrogen from surplus nuclear power, thus increasing overall energy efficiency and preventing energy waste.
The President and CEO of Nel ASA, Håkon Volldal, expressed satisfaction in being selected again to deliver the electrolyser for this significant project. Samsung C&T, known for its global engineering, procurement, and construction focus, has been actively engaging in green hydrogen projects and is committed to expanding its energy transition business portfolio. Byung Soo Lee, the Head of Energy Solution Business Unit at Samsung C&T, emphasized the importance of Nel's technology in executing the first hydrogen production project using nuclear power in Korea.
The partnership plans entail the production of alkaline stacks and balance-of-stacks (BoS) for the project. The electrodes will be manufactured at the Herøya facility in Norway, which boasts the world's first fully automated electrolyser production line. The collaboration signifies a significant step forward in utilizing nuclear power for hydrogen production in Korea, with Samsung C&T showing confidence in Nel's technology and expressing eagerness to enhance their cooperation in the clean hydrogen sector.
