Stegra and Uniper Partner for Green Steel Production in Northern Sweden
Key Ideas
- Stegra and Uniper have signed a six-year power purchase agreement to supply 6TWh of electricity to Stegra's Boden green steel plant in Northern Sweden.
- The electricity will power Stegra's flagship Boden power plant, producing green hydrogen, green iron, and green steel, with a potential CO2 emissions reduction of up to 95% compared to traditional steelmaking.
- Stegra aims to produce 2.5 million tonnes of green steel annually by 2026 and 5 million tonnes by 2030, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable manufacturing.
- The partnership between Stegra and Uniper is seen as a strategic move to accelerate the reduction of industrial emissions in Europe through the production of green hydrogen and steel at scale.
Stegra and energy company Uniper have entered into a significant agreement to facilitate the production of green steel in Boden, Northern Sweden. The six-year power purchase agreement will supply 6TWh of electricity starting from 2027 to power Stegra's flagship Boden power plant. This plant will house a 700MW electrolysis facility to generate green hydrogen, essential for reducing iron ore to green sponge iron that will feed the steel production process. The shift from coal to green hydrogen and electrification in steelmaking is expected to result in a remarkable 95% decrease in CO2 emissions compared to traditional methods.
Stegra's ambitious goals include producing 2.5 million tonnes of green steel per year by 2026 and doubling that output to 5 million tonnes by 2030, emphasizing a strong commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices. This initiative aligns with Stegra's vision, founded as H2 Green Steel in 2020 and later rebranded as Stegra in 2024 to emphasize its dedication to decarbonizing challenging industrial sectors.
Arne Österlind, the head of Energy Portfolio at Stegra, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership with Uniper in ensuring long-term electricity supply for the Boden plant. This collaboration marks a key milestone in the journey towards cutting industrial emissions in Europe by leveraging green hydrogen and steel production on a large scale.
