Sustainable Hydrogen Production Project Launched in Switzerland
Key Ideas
- Axpo and partners begin construction on a green hydrogen production plant in Bürglen, Switzerland.
- The plant will produce 260 tonnes of green hydrogen annually using green electricity from a hydropower facility, reducing diesel consumption significantly.
- Green hydrogen will be used to power the passenger vessel Saphir on Lake Lucerne, contributing to sustainable transport solutions.
- Axpo's commitment to decarbonization is demonstrated through this project and other upcoming hydrogen initiatives in Switzerland.
Axpo, in collaboration with partners Schätzle AG, EWA-Energie Uri, and SGV Holding AG, has started building a state-of-the-art hydrogen production plant in Bürglen, Switzerland. The plant, part of the H2Uri project, will leverage green electricity from a nearby hydropower plant to produce 260 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, eliminating the need for over a million liters of diesel. This green hydrogen will be used to fuel the passenger vessel Saphir, showcasing a significant move towards sustainable transport. Additionally, Schätzle AG, a shareholder of H2Uri, will source green hydrogen for their hydrogen refueling station. The project aims to enhance Switzerland's energy security and promote a sustainable energy mix. Axpo is also progressing with another green hydrogen plant in Aargau, set to begin construction in 2025. These initiatives underscore Axpo's dedication to decarbonization and its efforts to drive innovation in renewable energy locally and globally.
