TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Production for Refineries in Europe
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and Air Liquide's joint venture aims to produce 45,000 tons of green hydrogen annually using renewable power from an offshore wind farm.
  • The projects will significantly reduce carbon emissions at TotalEnergies' refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands by up to 450,000 tons per year.
  • The collaboration includes setting up a 250MW electrolyser near the Zeeland refinery to produce 30,000 tons of green hydrogen yearly, with most to be delivered to Zeeland's platform.
  • By 2030, TotalEnergies aims to decarbonise the hydrogen consumed by its European refineries, with the collaboration marking a significant step towards achieving this goal.
TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have partnered to develop projects for the production of around 45,000 tons of green hydrogen annually. This green hydrogen will be generated using renewable power, primarily sourced from the OranjeWind offshore wind farm. The collaboration is targeted at cutting carbon emissions from TotalEnergies' refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands by up to 450,000 tons each year. A joint venture, equally owned by TotalEnergies and Air Liquide, will be responsible for building and operating a 250MW electrolyser near the Zeeland refinery. This electrolyser will produce up to 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, with a significant portion planned for delivery to Zeeland's platform. Furthermore, TotalEnergies will dedicate 130MW for producing 15,000 tons per year of green hydrogen for its Antwerp platform, thereby reducing emissions by up to 150,000 tons annually. Vincent Stoquart, President of Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in decarbonising the hydrogen used by the company's refineries in Europe by 2030. By leveraging renewable electricity from their offshore wind project in the Netherlands, TotalEnergies is advancing its role as an integrated electricity company.
