RWE and TotalEnergies have agreed on TotalEnergies acquiring a 50% stake in RWE's OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands. TotalEnergies plans to utilize its share of electricity from the 795 MW OranjeWind to generate green hydrogen. This move aligns with TotalEnergies' objective of decarbonizing its refineries in Europe by replacing current hydrogen consumption with green hydrogen, thereby avoiding the emission of about 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The partners have finalized the investment decision to build the 759 MW project, with construction set to commence in 2026 and full commissioning expected in early 2028. The OranjeWind offshore wind farm will feature 53 Vestas V236-15 MW wind turbines and will be installed using sustainable practices by selected suppliers like Sif, Jan De Nul, and TKF. TotalEnergies and RWE are focused on integrating system solutions, including electrolyser projects, smart EV charging, e-boilers, and battery storage to enhance the sustainability of the project. The collaboration between the companies signifies a step towards achieving a more environmentally friendly energy system in the Netherlands, addressing challenges related to wind generation and energy demand flexibility. The joint venture between RWE and TotalEnergies aims to contribute significantly to the reduction of CO2 emissions by leveraging green hydrogen production and other innovative solutions in the offshore wind sector.
