TotalEnergies Partners with RWE for Green Hydrogen Production at OranjeWind Offshore Wind Farm
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies acquires a 50% stake in the OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Netherlands, dedicating its share of electricity production to power electrolyser projects for green hydrogen production.
  • The green hydrogen generated will help decarbonize TotalEnergies' refineries in Northern Europe, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately five million tonnes per year by 2030.
  • OranjeWind project, located in the North Sea, will not only produce green power and hydrogen but also contribute to the stability of the Dutch grid with electric boilers and battery storage, with construction set to begin in 2026 for full commissioning in early 2028.
TotalEnergies has partnered with German renewable developer RWE to acquire a 50 per cent stake in the OranjeWind offshore wind farm, a 795MW project under development in the Netherlands. TotalEnergies plans to use its share of the renewable electricity production from this wind farm to power 350MW electrolyser projects, generating around 40,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually to decarbonize its refineries in Northern Europe. By leveraging OranjeWind for green hydrogen production, TotalEnergies aims to cut its CO2 emissions by about five million tonnes per year by 2030. The company intends to replace the hydrogen currently consumed in its refineries with green or low-carbon hydrogen, thereby avoiding around 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The OranjeWind project, situated in the North Sea, was secured by RWE in 2022 through the Dutch Hollandse Kust West VII tender, with plans to develop electrolysers. The project will also contribute to the stability of the Dutch grid through electric boilers and battery storage. Construction of the wind farm is set to commence in 2026, with full operations expected by early 2028.
