TotalEnergies Partners with RWE for Groundbreaking Green Hydrogen Supply Agreement
Key Ideas
  • TotalEnergies and RWE have agreed on a deal for the annual supply of 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen to the Leuna refinery in Germany from 2030 onwards.
  • The green hydrogen will be generated by a 300 MW electrolyzer in Lingen, with a storage facility and a 600 km pipeline facilitating its delivery to the refinery entrance.
  • This initiative is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 300,000 tonnes annually, marking a significant step towards decarbonization.
  • The contracted quantity of green hydrogen from RWE's electrolyzer is the largest ever in Germany, showcasing a major milestone in the country's hydrogen industry.
TotalEnergies has recently announced a pivotal agreement with German developer RWE, solidifying plans for the annual supply of 30,000 tonnes of green hydrogen to the Leuna refinery in Germany. The agreement spans a duration of 15 years starting from 2030. The green hydrogen production will be spearheaded by a 300 MW electrolyzer to be constructed and operated by RWE in Lingen. To ensure efficient logistics, a storage facility will be established in close proximity, and the green hydrogen will be transported via a 600 km pipeline to the Leuna refinery's entry point. This strategic move is expected to result in a substantial reduction of around 300,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually from the Leuna site, commencing in 2030. Noteworthy is the fact that this contractual volume of green hydrogen sourced from RWE's electrolyzer represents a record quantity in Germany, underscoring a groundbreaking development in the nation's hydrogen landscape and reinforcing the commitment to sustainability and energy transition.
