UNHCR and LONGi Green Energy Technology Co Ltd. have collaborated to introduce phase one of a climate action and solar energy project in Uzbekistan to diminish the carbon emissions of UNHCR emergency stockpiles worldwide. The initiative commenced at the UNHCR Regional Humanitarian Logistics Hub in Termez, equipped with a 700kW solar photovoltaic power plant provided by LONGi. This hub has been instrumental in processing significant amounts of relief items for refugees and internally displaced persons, promoting dignity, health, and self-reliance.
The partnership between UNHCR and LONGi emphasizes sustainable development and energy equity, particularly for displaced populations. The solarization project launch ceremony was attended by government representatives, local authorities, and United Nations officials, highlighting the commitment to environmental sustainability and humanitarian support. The project not only focuses on reducing the environmental impact of aid operations but also addresses the consequences of climate change in the Surkhandarya region.
Additionally, the collaboration extends to a global partnership agreement signed in December 2023, encompassing Climate Action, Energy Equity, and Green Transformation projects. The upcoming phase in Uzbekistan involves planting trees by Afghan citizens and community members to establish windbreaks, aligning with Uzbekistan's tree planting initiative for climate mitigation and economic opportunities.
UNHCR's Regional Humanitarian Logistics Hub, established with Uzbekistan's support, plays a crucial role in enabling swift replenishment of stockpiles and enhancing humanitarian response agility. LONGi, as a leading solar technology company, focuses on green energy solutions and hydrogen equipment to contribute to global zero carbon development. The project signifies a step towards a sustainable, green future for displaced individuals and host communities, emphasizing self-reliance, peace, and stability.
