Uniper's Green Wilhelmshaven Project: Pioneering Green Hydrogen Hub in Northern Germany
Key Ideas
  • German energy major Uniper partners with U.S. electrolyzer manufacturer Electric Hydrogen for a 200 MW electrolyzer plant in Northern Germany.
  • The Green Wilhelmshaven project includes large-scale electrolysis for green hydrogen production and an ammonia import terminal, leveraging wind power.
  • Uniper aims to establish Wilhelmshaven as a central hub for green hydrogen, connecting to the German hydrogen backbone and supporting decarbonization efforts.
  • Both Uniper and Electric Hydrogen express enthusiasm about the project, highlighting the potential to drive the energy transition and economic sustainability of green hydrogen.
German energy company Uniper has chosen U.S. electrolyzer manufacturer Electric Hydrogen to develop a 200 MW electrolyzer plant at the Green Wilhelmshaven project in Northern Germany. This initiative comprises large-scale electrolysis for green hydrogen production and an ammonia import terminal, utilizing renewable electricity sourced from wind farms. The electrolyzer will be constructed in Wilhelmshaven on the premises of Uniper's former coal-fired power plant, while the ammonia import terminal will be situated near the company's LNG terminal. Both facilities will be interconnected with the German hydrogen network and underground storage units in Northern Germany. Uniper's goal is to position Wilhelmshaven as a vital hub for green hydrogen in the country, contributing to the decarbonization of industry. Susanne Thöle, Uniper's Director of Hydrogen, emphasizes the company's commitment to advancing the energy transition and ensuring a secure and sustainable energy supply for Europe. Electric Hydrogen's CEO, Raffi Garabedian, echoes this sentiment, highlighting their partnership with Uniper to drive the adoption of low-carbon energy solutions. The collaborative efforts between Uniper and Electric Hydrogen signify a significant step towards realizing a greener and economically viable hydrogen economy.
