Veidekke, a construction company, has partnered with Norwegian Hydrogen to introduce green hydrogen as an energy source in its newly converted asphalt production plant in Ålesund, Norway. Norwegian Hydrogen previously supplied green hydrogen to Veidekke's asphalt plant in Kristiansund, making it a pioneer in sustainable asphalt production. This transition is significant as traditional asphalt production in Norway relies on high thermal energy, natural gas, diesel, and biodiesel, resulting in approximately 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. By utilizing green hydrogen, Veidekke aims to reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to a more eco-friendly production process. Norwegian Hydrogen's Hellesylt plant, which recently produced its first green hydrogen molecules, is nearing completion of testing and commissioning. Apart from Veidekke, the plant will also supply green hydrogen to companies like Cyan Energy for EV charging and Skulebas for maritime development. The Director of Asphalt at Veidekke expressed optimism about future collaborations with Norwegian Hydrogen, emphasizing the latter's commitment to delivering sustainable solutions. Overall, the partnership signifies a step towards a greener construction industry and highlights the potential for hydrogen to play a key role in reducing emissions across various sectors.
