The VOC Port in India, located in Thoothukudi, is aiming to position itself as the green hydrogen hub of the country. To achieve this, the port is planning to set up a pilot plant with a daily capacity of 10 tonnes to gain practical experience in producing, storing, and transporting green hydrogen. Additionally, discussions are underway with a Korean conglomerate to establish a shipbuilding facility at the port, as part of India's strategy to expand its fleet size and reduce reliance on foreign shipping companies. The Union shipping ministry is actively involved in exploring various options to achieve this goal, emphasizing the importance of local shipbuilders. Plans also include the creation of a Maritime Development Fund worth Rs 25,000 crore to facilitate long-term financing for the maritime sector, with a significant government contribution. This multi-faceted approach not only positions VOC Port as a key player in green hydrogen but also highlights India's commitment to enhancing its maritime infrastructure and industry.
