Ballard Power Systems and Stadler US Partner to Decarbonize California Rail with Hydrogen Trains
Key Ideas
  • Ballard Power Systems signs multi-year agreement with Stadler US to supply 8 megawatts of FCmove®-HD+ hydrogen engines for FLIRT H2 trains in California.
  • The project aims to replace diesel models on non-electrified lines, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and avoiding costly investments in catenary infrastructure.
  • The partnership demonstrates successful integration of hydrogen engines into trains meeting FRA standards, providing zero-emission solutions with comparable performance to diesel engines.
  • Hydrogen train technology offers strategic advantages for California by helping the state achieve carbon neutrality goals without the need for track electrification.
Canadian company Ballard Power Systems has signed a significant multi-year agreement with Stadler US to supply 8 megawatts of FCmove®-HD+ hydrogen engines for integration into FLIRT H2 trains designed to meet FRA standards in California. This partnership represents a key step in decarbonizing rail transport in the state by providing zero-emission solutions. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is set to purchase 10 trains with an option for 19 more, aiming to replace diesel models on non-electrified lines and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Ballard and Stadler's collaboration has successfully demonstrated hydrogen engine technology, making FLIRT H2 the first hydrogen-powered train complying with FRA standards in the US. The CEO of Ballard expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the relevance of fuel cell solutions for regions without catenary infrastructure. This initiative offers strategic advantages for California, allowing it to modernize its transportation network sustainably while meeting ambitious carbon neutrality goals. The FLIRT H2 trains powered by Ballard engines showcase a global trend towards adopting hydrogen as a clean energy source in the rail sector, providing zero-emission mobility solutions and contributing to the global energy transition.
