Corsica Sole Partners with Enapter and HENSOLDT Nexeya France to Produce Hydrogen from Solar Energy
Key Ideas
- Corsica Sole, Enapter, and HENSOLDT Nexeya France collaborate to convert excess solar energy into hydrogen, aiming to optimize local energy resources and reduce dependence on imports.
- The Folell’Hy project will produce 2 tonnes of hydrogen per year and serve the energy needs of Lycée Maritime Professionnel in Bastia, with plans for industrial and mobility applications.
- This innovative project, with a storage capacity of around 100 kg of hydrogen, is a pilot initiative set to pave the way for larger-scale hydrogen production projects on the island.
- Corsica Sole's strategic partnership with Enapter and HENSOLDT Nexeya France signifies a step towards greater energy self-sufficiency and stability for Corsica through the utilization of renewable hydrogen.
Corsica Sole, an independent solar power producer in Europe, has entered a strategic partnership with Enapter, a German electrolyser manufacturer, and HENSOLDT Nexeya France, aiming to convert excess solar energy from the Folelli power plant into hydrogen. The Folell’Hy project, set to open in the second half of 2025, will use Enapter's electrolyzers and HENSOLDT Nexeya France's expertise to produce 2 tonnes of hydrogen annually. This renewable hydrogen will be stored in mobile tanks and directly connected to the existing Folelli solar power plant, enhancing energy autonomy on the island.
The initiative, starting with servicing the energy demand of Lycée Maritime Professionnel in Bastia, will expand to test new applications and accumulate feedback for larger projects. By harnessing local energy sources to generate hydrogen, Corsica Sole and its partners aim to enhance energy efficiency and reduce energy import reliance.
The project's technological advancements, including Enapter's electrolyzers with a 30 Nm3/h production capacity, enable versatile use of the produced hydrogen for industrial and mobility purposes. Folell’Hy serves as a stepping stone for future initiatives, indicating Corsica Sole's pioneering role in the local hydrogen sector and the island's journey towards energy self-sufficiency.
Jean-Gabriel STEINMETZ, Corsica Sole’s Director of New Markets, praises the cutting-edge technology brought by the partnership, emphasizing the project's potential in the hydrogen refueling and storage market. The successful implementation of Folell’Hy not only marks a significant milestone in Corsica's energy transition but also sets the stage for scalable hydrogen production projects to further strengthen the island's energy stability.
