European-African Hydrogen Corridor Project Unites Nations for Sustainable Energy Future
Key Ideas
  • Representatives from multiple countries sign letter of intent for a 3,500-kilometre hydrogen corridor spanning southern Europe and northern Africa.
  • Germany to receive 55 TWh per year through the pipeline, with two-thirds of the corridor utilizing retrofitted natural gas pipelines.
  • Tunisia and Algeria announce hydrogen infrastructure projects, aiming to strengthen economic ties and create new jobs.
  • Initiative seen as a significant step towards European energy security and decarbonisation, emphasizing local needs and sustainability.
Government representatives from Algeria, Austria, Italy, Germany, and Tunisia, among others, have signed a joint letter of intent in Rome for a new hydrogen corridor that will link southern Europe with northern Africa via the Mediterranean Sea. The project aims to build a 3,500-kilometre hydrogen pipeline transporting over 163 terawatt hours (TWh) of hydrogen per year, with 55 TWh designated for Germany. The corridor will largely repurpose existing natural gas pipelines for efficient transport. Tunisia and Algeria are actively involved in hydrogen infrastructure projects, with Algeria partnering with European companies for large-scale production. The initiative is praised as a major renewable energy project, enhancing economic ties between North Africa and Europe. German involvement is highlighted as crucial in supporting local economies and fostering job creation in Algeria and Tunisia. The project is envisioned to bolster European energy security and promote decarbonisation strategies, with a focus on sustainability and local needs. The partnering countries aim to collaborate closely in establishing a robust value creation chain for the project's success.
