Shipbuilder Fincantieri and Viking River Cruises have unveiled plans for the development of hydrogen-powered cruise ships, with the introduction of the first vessel, Viking Libra, expected in late 2026. The innovative ship is designed to operate using hydrogen stored on board to generate electricity for its propulsion system, marking a significant step towards sustainable maritime transportation. The Viking Libra, touted as a zero-emission ship, boasts impressive specifications, including a length of approximately 784 feet, a gross tonnage of around 54,300 tons, and accommodations for nearly 1,000 passengers across 499 cabins. The vessel's hydrogen propulsion system is projected to deliver a substantial six megawatts of power, facilitated by advanced fuel cell technology provided by Fincantieri's Isotta Fraschini Motori (IFM) subsidiary. Furthermore, Fincantieri is also set to construct the Viking Astrea, another hydrogen-powered ship scheduled for completion in 2027. The company's commitment to sustainable practices is underscored by the utilization of cutting-edge polymer electrolyte membrane technology to harness hydrogen stored in a containerized system on board the Viking Libra. In addition to the development of these hydrogen-powered ships, Fincantieri and Viking have penned an agreement for the construction of two more cruise vessels, with the possibility of two additional ships in the future. The contract's substantial value, estimated between $565 million and $1.1 billion, reflects the growing trend towards eco-conscious innovations in the maritime industry. Viking CEO Torstein Hagen expressed admiration for the environmentally friendly design of the ships, emphasizing their contribution to reducing fuel consumption and promoting sustainable transportation solutions. The collaboration between Fincantieri and Viking heralds a new era of eco-friendly cruise ship construction, aligning with the industry's shift towards cleaner energy sources and enhanced environmental stewardship.
