A new consortium named PoWer, consisting of leading off-highway vehicle OEMs, suppliers, and academic institutions in Germany, has been established to investigate the utilization of hydrogen engine powertrains for construction and agricultural machinery. Mahle, a prominent automotive supplier, is spearheading this three-year project with €5.1 million in funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. Other members include Liebherr, Deutz, Kit, DLR, and more. The consortium's focus is on leveraging hydrogen engines' benefits such as efficiency, robustness, and low emissions for off-road applications. The project will involve vehicle concept studies, fleet and infrastructure considerations, as well as the development of exhaust gas aftertreatment systems.
