The energy sector in Texas faces the challenge of meeting growing energy demand while striving to reduce emissions. Kurt Lyell, Solar Program Manager at HDR, is set to present an innovative solution at the POWERGEN International 2025 event in Dallas. The focus is on balancing cost efficiency and environmental sustainability by introducing a hydrogen-blending concept. This concept involves integrating a 400 MW natural gas peaking plant with a green hydrogen facility in West Texas. By utilizing the abundant solar and wind resources in the state, green hydrogen will be produced and blended into existing natural gas pipelines. Over time, the energy from hydrogen will offset the plant's natural gas consumption, achieving carbon neutrality while maintaining operational efficiency. Lyell's session will delve into the economic feasibility of the project, exploring aspects like the levelized cost of energy and the challenges related to infrastructure and regulations in scaling up hydrogen adoption.
