The Citybus in Hong Kong recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing the maiden cross-harbor trip of the city's first hydrogen double-decker bus on Route 170. This route connects Hong Kong Island and New Territories, passing through key toll tunnels. Citybus aims to transition its entire fleet to hydrogen or electric buses by 2045, with a commitment to no longer purchasing diesel buses. Richard Hall, the managing director of Citybus, emphasized the company's dedication to sustainability by planning a one-for-one replacement strategy. The innovative journey was lauded as a crucial step towards a greener future for public transportation in Hong Kong. However, the high cost of hydrogen buses, currently standing at HK$8 million, poses a challenge. Edward Lau Kwok-fan, chairman of the Legislative Council Panel on Environmental Affairs, highlighted the need for regulatory advancements to establish technical standards and drive down production costs. He expressed optimism that with increased demand and streamlined production, the cost of hydrogen buses could potentially be reduced to HK$5 million or less.
