Innovative Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Tractor Debuts in Austria
Key Ideas
  • STEYR and TU Wien collaborate on a hydrogen fuel cell-powered concept tractor based on a standard STEYR 4140 Expert CVT model.
  • The tractor project aims for end-to-end sustainability, producing hydrogen from biogenic raw materials and emitting only water vapor.
  • The FCTRAC tractor, with a 14 kWh high-voltage battery, develops 95 kW, matching its diesel equivalent in power output.
  • The innovative tractor attracted attention at the Austrian State Prize for Technology awards in Vienna for its groundbreaking technical innovation.
A groundbreaking hydrogen fuel cell-powered concept tractor has been unveiled in Austria, as a result of a collaboration between STEYR, a CNH brand, and TU Wien. The project, named STEYR FCTRAC, involved the development of a tractor that operates on a hydrogen fuel cell power unit. The tractor, based on a standard STEYR 4140 Expert continuously variable transmission (CVT) model, was created by CNH's engineering team in Austria in partnership with other project collaborators. The main focus of the project was on sustainability, achieved through a BioH2Module that produces hydrogen from biogenic raw materials, requiring only 15-16 kg of dry biomass to produce hydrogen equivalent to 3.5 liters of diesel. The hydrogen-powered tractor emits only water vapor, with no compromise on power output. Equipped with a 14 kWh high-voltage battery and a 400 V electrical system, the FCTRAC tractor generates 95 kW of power, matching its diesel-powered counterpart. The fuel cell and electric drive systems replace the traditional diesel engine, with the fuel tank being substituted by a compressed hydrogen storage system and a high-voltage battery. The STEYR FCTRAC tractor gained significant recognition at the Austrian State Prize for Technology awards in Vienna, where it was nominated in the ‘Mobility Technologies' category for its exceptional technical innovation.
