A new hydrogen-powered ship named Mahoroba has been unveiled in Japan for the purpose of transporting passengers to and from the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka. The ship, measuring 33 meters in length and capable of carrying up to 150 people, operates by generating electricity from hydrogen and oxygen, thereby producing no carbon dioxide emissions. The unveiling of this vessel is part of Japan's initiative to showcase its decarbonization technology at the expo scheduled to open in April. By running at 10 knots, equivalent to about 20 kilometers per hour, the ship aims to demonstrate the efficiency and environmental benefits of using hydrogen as a sustainable energy source for maritime transportation. Developed by Iwatani Corporation, the Mahoroba is set to operate three days a week during the event, connecting various routes including Nakanoshima, Universal City Port, and the expo site at Yumeshima. The establishment of a hydrogen station for ships at Kansai Electric Power Company's thermal power plant in Osaka Port further emphasizes the country's commitment to creating a hydrogen-based infrastructure. Sano Yuichi, an official from Iwatani Corporation, expressed optimism that the ship will not only provide a unique travel experience for passengers but also showcase the immense potential of hydrogen as an eco-friendly energy alternative.
