A new report indicates that developing Ireland's hydrogen fuel industry could lead to hundreds of job opportunities, attract more than €6 billion in investment, and enhance energy security in the transport sector. Advocates of green hydrogen believe that Ireland's abundance of renewable energy and water make it an ideal location for such initiatives. However, despite the potential benefits, there is currently only one hydrogen refuelling station in Ireland, and just 1% of newly registered heavy-duty vehicles use alternative fuels. The report, commissioned by Hydrogen Mobility Ireland (HMI), proposes a phased approach to introduce hydrogen into various transport sectors, aiming to reduce emissions and create new jobs. It highlights the need for a supportive policy platform to achieve these goals, emphasizing the importance of government commitments for matching funding to unlock European Union support. HMI stresses the infrastructure gap between Ireland and other European countries in terms of hydrogen investment. The organization urges the government to prioritize policies that stimulate demand for hydrogen and e-fuels to capitalize on the significant opportunities presented by the hydrogen industry. By following a structured adoption program, Ireland could not only reduce carbon emissions but also boost job creation, attract investments, and enhance energy security.
