ITS Orders Eight Near Zero Emission Transtainers for Long Beach Terminal
Key Ideas
- ITS, now majority-owned by MIP V, continues to invest in Mitsui PACECO equipment for its Long Beach terminal, including hybrid RTGs designed for zero emissions.
- The new RTGs feature a hybrid design with a small diesel genset that can be converted to a hydrogen fuel cell for zero emissions operation in the future.
- Mitsui PACECO's initiative aligns with the Clean Air Action Plan for the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to achieve zero emissions from cargo handling equipment by 2030.
- The company aims to enhance port infrastructure safety in the U.S. by providing environmentally-friendly cranes and supporting customer operations with high-quality equipment.
International Transportation Service, LLC (ITS) in Long Beach, now majority-owned by MIP V, has recently ordered eight Mitsui PACECO hybrid RTGs for its terminal. These cranes, known as 'Near Zero Emission Hybrid Transtainers', are equipped with a small diesel genset that can recharge a battery pack. Mitsui PACECO's design allows for the potential future conversion of the diesel genset to a hydrogen fuel cell, aiming for zero emissions operation. The company has a history of providing equipment to ITS, including STS cranes and RTGs ordered in 2023.
Mitsui PACECO is actively working towards achieving zero emissions at ports, with ongoing demonstrations of a zero emissions hybrid RTG with a fuel cell at Yusen Terminals in the Port of Los Angeles. The new cranes for ITS are not funded by grants, so they are not subject to Build America Buy America (BABA) requirements.
Mitsui PACECO's decision to manufacture and assemble these new RTGs in Japan, rather than the U.S., may be due to ongoing plans for bringing container crane assembly to the U.S. The company aims to contribute to the Clean Air Action Plan, targeting zero emissions for all cargo handling equipment at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach by 2030.
In response to U.S. government initiatives on port cybersecurity, Mitsui has emphasized its commitment to providing safe and environmentally-friendly cranes, further supporting the U.S. port infrastructure and aiming for business expansion in the region.
