Kellanova UK recently achieved a milestone by conducting a groundbreaking hydrogen demonstration at a Kellogg's factory in Manchester. Over a three-week period, the team successfully utilized hydrogen to power the toasting oven, producing popular cereals like Corn Flakes, Bran Flakes, Special K, and Rice Krispies. This initiative, partly financed by a £3 million grant from the UK's Department for Energy Security & Net Zero, was a key element of the HyNet Industrial Fuel Switching programme. The project is part of the larger Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, aiming to support decarbonisation efforts in industries. Sam Bistiaux, the vice president of manufacturing at Kellanova, emphasized the significance of this demonstration as a step towards reducing carbon footprints in the industry. He expressed optimism about the transformative potential of investing in low carbon fuels. Furthermore, David Parkin, the chair of HyNet Alliance, commended the positive impact of hydrogen investment on industries, society, and the environment. The success of the demonstration at Kellogg's serves as a beacon for other businesses, encouraging them to explore similar sustainable practices. Despite the positive outcomes of the trial, the Kellogg's Manchester factory is set to close by the end of 2026, showcasing the evolving landscape of industry and sustainability efforts.
