Keyou, a hydrogen power specialist, in collaboration with construction and mining machine OEM Komatsu, has developed the world's first 12-cylinder hydrogen internal combustion (IC) engine for a mining haul truck. This groundbreaking project is currently undergoing testing at the Komatsu plant in Ibaraki, Japan, setting the stage for the future of hydrogen-powered machinery. The partnership between Keyou and Komatsu, initiated in 2019, has reached a milestone in 2023 with the commencement of the H2 engine development. The successful start of the engine in the subsequent year marks a significant step towards integrating hydrogen technology into heavy-duty vehicles. Komatsu's CTO and president, Taisuke Kusaba, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating its importance in Komatsu's pursuit of carbon neutrality. Keyou's COO and CTO, Markus Schneider, also praised the collaboration, highlighting the performance of Keyou's technology in challenging environments. Keyou has been actively involved in developing hydrogen IC engines for various OEMs and offers its 'H2 Mobility as a Service' model, providing customers with internal hydrogen-powered trucks. The delivery of the first vehicle under this service to EP Trans in Regensburg, Germany in early 2025 signifies a significant progression in the adoption of hydrogen technology in the commercial vehicle sector.
