The OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the Hollandse Kust West VII field, situated in the North Sea off the Dutch coast, is poised to be a groundbreaking project that integrates renewable energy with green hydrogen production. Germany's RWE, the winner of the tender for the site in 2022, has sold 50% to France's TotalEnergies, which plans to use its share of the power to produce green hydrogen. This move aligns with the project's objective of matching intermittent electricity production with flexible energy demand, including electrolyzers for hydrogen production and solutions for electric vehicles, heating, and battery storage. The aim is to leverage innovative technologies such as floating solar farms and LiDar systems to efficiently utilize ocean space and develop advanced energy storage systems. TotalEnergies intends to power a 350 MW electrolyzer, generating approximately 40,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to replace current hydrogen usage in its refineries, thereby preventing about 400,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year. The project, comprising 53 Vestas 15 MW turbines, will be led by RWE, with construction set to commence in 2026 and full operation targeted for early 2028, marking RWE's debut in the Dutch market. This initiative is expected to serve as a blueprint in the industry for addressing the challenges of intermittent wind generation and ensuring flexibility in energy demand.
