Swedish hydrogen fuel cell provider PowerCell has achieved approval in principle (AiP) from DNV for a new methanol-to-power solution designed for the maritime industry. This innovative solution combines a methanol reformer from RIX Industries with the newly launched PowerCell Marine System 225, delivering 225 kW of clean electric power with zero emissions. The integration of the methanol reformer with the fuel cell system simplifies the process of converting methanol into hydrogen, enhancing safety and efficiency. PowerCell's CEO, Richard Berkling, highlighted the company's 'Industrialized Innovation' strategy, aiming to minimize time-to-market, technical risk, and investment for customers involved in marine electrification and decarbonisation. The collaboration between PowerCell and RIX Industries focuses on providing value to marine customers by simplifying bunkering, integration, and commissioning processes. In partnership with methanol-to-hydrogen technology firm e1 Marine, PowerCell and RIX Industries conducted successful tests for a 200kW propulsion chain in 2023. These tests showcased the feasibility of converting methanol fuel to hydrogen onboard ships, which is then used in a fuel cell system to generate power efficiently. The collaboration between PowerCell, RIX Industries, and e1 Marine demonstrates a commitment to advancing sustainable solutions for the maritime industry, offering energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternatives for ship propulsion.
