Revolutionizing Maritime Operations: UK Launches World's First Green Hydrogen Shore Power Demonstrator
Key Ideas
  • Innovate UK and partners launch the world's first Green Hydrogen Shore Power Demonstrator in the Port of Leith, utilizing clean hydrogen to reduce vessel emissions.
  • The project integrates water treatment, waste heat utilization, and hydrogen production to provide clean shore power for maritime operations, contributing to the decarbonization of ports.
  • The initiative, part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4, aims to decarbonize domestic shipping with a £236 million UK SHORE program.
  • By converting wastewater into fresh reuse water and producing green hydrogen without impacting local supplies, the project showcases innovative green hydrogen use for decarbonizing ports and shipping.
Innovate UK, in collaboration with the UK Department for Transport and partners like Forth Ports, has introduced the groundbreaking Green Hydrogen Shore Power Demonstrator at the Port of Leith. This project aims to use clean hydrogen to reduce emissions from vessels. The initiative incorporates water treatment, waste heat utilization, and hydrogen production to offer clean shore power for maritime operations, marking a significant step towards the decarbonization of ports. By utilizing specialist treatment technology from Waterwhelm to convert wastewater into fresh reuse water and produce green hydrogen at the Port of Leith, the project demonstrates a sustainable approach without impacting local supplies. Moreover, Logan Energy's electrolyser splits water into oxygen and hydrogen, which then fuels PlusZero Power's Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (HICE) generator. The Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Fiona Hyslop, praised the project as a world first for Scotland, emphasizing the importance of green hydrogen in reducing carbon emissions while vessels are docked. The project is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4, funded by the UK Department for Transport through the £236 million UK SHORE program aimed at decarbonizing domestic shipping. The CEO of Forth Ports, Stuart Wallace, highlighted the initiative as a significant step towards the company's commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2042. The project not only showcases innovative use of green hydrogen but also positions the Port of Leith as a pioneer in adopting such technological advancements in the maritime sector. This visionary project sets a remarkable example for other ports in the UK and globally, underlining the potential of green hydrogen in decarbonizing maritime operations.
