Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors has initiated trials of hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks for long haul transportation in India. This venture is part of Tata Motors' dedication to sustainable mobility solutions and is in line with India's target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. Securing a tender from the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Tata Motors will conduct trials under the National Green Hydrogen Mission to evaluate the feasibility of hydrogen-powered vehicles for long-distance haulage and establish the required infrastructure. Lasting up to two years, the trials will deploy 16 advanced hydrogen-powered vehicles with different configurations and payload capacities along major freight routes in India, including cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi-NCR. These trucks, such as the Tata Prima H.55S and Tata Prima H.28, are designed to offer sustainable, cost-efficient transportation with an operational range of 300-500km. Additionally, the trucks feature the 'premium Prima cabin' and 'advanced driver-assist safety features' to enhance driver comfort, safety, and productivity. The initiative has been praised by India Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, as a significant step towards showcasing the potential of green hydrogen in decarbonising India's transportation sector. Furthermore, Tata Motors recently inaugurated a vehicle scrapping facility in Guwahati, Assam, named 'Re.Wi.Re – Recycle with Respect,' which can dismantle up to 15,000 end-of-life vehicles annually in an eco-friendly manner.
