Walmart Canada is breaking new ground in supply chain sustainability by introducing a hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck, marking a significant milestone in the company's environmental efforts. The Canadian subsidiary of Walmart is utilizing the Nikola Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Class 8 tractor, which operates with zero tailpipe emissions and can cover a range of approximately 500 miles. By deploying this innovative truck sourced from ITD Industries Inc. in Ontario for longer-haul trips, Walmart Canada aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 97 metric tons annually. Being the first retail fleet in North America to adopt such technology, Walmart Canada is on track to achieve a fully alternatively-powered fleet. The hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck stores high-pressure gaseous hydrogen and converts it to electricity through a fuel cell stack, resulting in water vapor as the sole byproduct. Walmart Inc., the parent company, has also committed to piloting natural gas, hydrogen, and electric truck engines as part of its sustainability initiatives, demonstrating a holistic approach to reducing emissions.
