Germany's ABO Energy Group has secured a planning reservation to build a 600MW hydrogen production plant in Oulu, Finland. The project will be executed in 2-3 phases, aiming for the first phase to be operational between 2034 and 2036. ABO Energy also considers the production of methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) in Oulu, subject to the availability of biogenic carbon dioxide. The waste heat generated by the plant could be utilized for district heating in the region. Finland's attractive investment environment, characterized by cheap electricity prices and substantial renewable energy capacity, was a key factor in selecting the location. ABO Energy emphasizes its capability to supply renewable energy directly to hydrogen projects through its wind energy portfolio. The Oulu region, known for being a significant renewable electricity producer in Finland, has seen other hydrogen-related projects announced recently. French firm Verso Energy plans to build a plant for e-SAF production, while Oulu Energy unveiled intentions for a 100MW electrolysis plant with e-fuel production and heat recovery aspects. These initiatives highlight the growing interest and investments in green energy development in the Oulu region.
