Ardagh Glass Packaging (AGP)-Europe in Limmared, Sweden, has embarked on a green hydrogen initiative by utilizing a 5MW electrolyser to produce hydrogen for glass melting. The company is incorporating proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology to introduce hydrogen into the energy mix of its glass furnace, with a goal of achieving a 20% hydrogen blend. Since starting the electrolyser testing in October 2024, the furnace has successfully combusted 109,000m3 of hydrogen on-site, resulting in a remarkable saving of up to 70 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. AGP-Europe's Project Manager, Daniel Johansson, has noted the positive progress of the testing phase with no adverse effects on glass quality or furnace operation. The CEO, Martin Petersson, emphasizes the significance of replacing natural gas with green hydrogen to reduce carbon emissions and advance sustainable glass packaging production. The involvement of companies like Ryze Hydrogen and Rega Energy highlights a broader industry push towards decarbonisation in glass manufacturing. Rega Energy's recent commitment to supply green hydrogen for glassware production and Ryze Hydrogen's long-term deal to provide hydrogen for glass manufacturing demonstrate a collective effort to drive sustainability and reduce environmental impact in the glass industry.
