ATCO EnPower and CPKC Complete Two Hydrogen Production & Refuelling Stations in Alberta
Key Ideas
  • ATCO EnPower and CPKC have completed the construction of two hydrogen production and refuelling stations in Calgary and Edmonton, aimed at advancing the Hydrogen Locomotive Program to reduce emissions in transportation.
  • CPKC is retrofitting diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells to operate without emissions, demonstrating a commitment to a lower carbon transportation future.
  • Each facility includes a 1-megawatt electrolyzer, compression, storage, and dispensing systems for locomotive refuelling, with the Calgary facility partially powered by renewable electricity from a solar power facility.
  • The completion of these facilities represents significant progress in utilizing hydrogen as a fuel source for commercial transportation, with plans to serve as a model for future projects across the country.
ATCO EnPower, a division of Canadian Utilities Limited, and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) have announced the completion of the construction of two hydrogen production and refuelling stations in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta. These facilities are fully operational and part of CPKC's innovative Hydrogen Locomotive Program, which involves retrofitting diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cells to operate without directly generating emissions, contributing to a lower carbon transportation future. CPKC's Assistant Vice President mentioned that these fuelling facilities are crucial for testing hydrogen locomotives and advancing the industry-leading program. ATCO EnPower provided engineering, procurement, and construction services for the facilities and will operate them. Each station includes a 1-megawatt electrolyzer, compression, storage, and dispensing systems for locomotive refuelling. The Calgary facility's electrolyzer is powered in part by renewable electricity from CPKC's existing solar power facility. The completion of these facilities signifies a significant step in utilizing hydrogen as a fuel source for commercial transportation, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and innovative energy solutions. The projects aim to serve as a model for future complementary ventures nationwide, showcasing the potential of hydrogen in creating a cleaner and more efficient mode of freight transportation for the rail industry.
