Enova's Investment in Norwegian Hydrogen Production for Maritime Industry
Key Ideas
- Enova granted over NOK 777 million to five hydrogen production projects in Norway to establish a hydrogen value chain along the coast, aiming to make hydrogen more accessible and sustainable for the maritime industry.
- The funded projects are expected to collectively reduce 200,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to 5.5% of the national emissions from shipping and fishing in Norway.
- Norwegian Ministers and Enova officials have shown strong support for these projects, emphasizing their potential to cut emissions not only in Norway but also globally, contributing to the transition towards cleaner energy sources.
- Enova plans to further support hydrogen and ammonia as fuels for the maritime sector, including investments in production, infrastructure, and vessels, demonstrating a commitment to innovative and emission-free solutions.
Enova, a Norwegian organization, has allocated NOK 777 million ($70.92 million) to five hydrogen production projects in Norway to advance the use of hydrogen in the country's maritime industry. The objective is to establish the first operational value chain for hydrogen in Norway, with the projects spanning from Slagentangen to Bodø along the coastline. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility to hydrogen as a sustainable fuel for the maritime sector.
The supported projects are expected to have a total production capacity of 120 MW, producing approximately 40 tons of hydrogen per day. Enova estimates that these projects will collectively reduce 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, which corresponds to 5.5% of the national emissions from shipping and fishing. The Minister of Climate and Environment, Tore O. Sandvik, highlighted the potential of these projects to not only reduce emissions in Norway but also drive the transition to cleaner energy solutions globally.
Energy Minister Terje Aasland praised the investment in innovative and emission-free solutions, emphasizing Norway's role as a leading maritime nation. Enova also announced plans to further support hydrogen and ammonia as fuels for the maritime industry, including funding for production, infrastructure, and vessels. Additionally, Enova will introduce a program to support bunkering facilities for ammonia along the coast.
Moreover, Enova has approved funding for 15 green ship projects and 17 shore power projects in 2024, totaling NOK 1.2 billion ($113.5 million) and NOK 143 million ($13.6 million), respectively. The ongoing investments by Enova demonstrate a commitment to advancing sustainable practices in the maritime sector and reducing emissions through the adoption of hydrogen and other clean energy sources.
