The European Commission has given the green light to State aid schemes in Austria and Lithuania, totaling €436m, to boost green hydrogen production in these countries. The aid will be channeled through the “Auctions-as-a-Service” tool within the European Hydrogen Bank and awarded via a competitive bidding process. In Austria, the support is expected to enable the production of up to 112 kt of renewable hydrogen, offsetting around 536 ktCO2. Similarly, in Lithuania, the aid will facilitate the production of 13 kt of renewable hydrogen, offsetting 61 ktCO2. Beneficiaries of the aid will be required to demonstrate adherence to EU criteria for renewable fuels of non-biological origin, including supporting the additional renewable electricity needed for hydrogen production. Additionally, the European Commission has recently received 61 project bids from 11 countries for the European Hydrogen Bank’s second auction aimed at fostering green hydrogen production.
