Hydrogen is emerging as a vital element in decarbonizing various sectors, offering economic opportunities for regions rich in renewable resources. The NZTC in Aberdeen is pioneering efforts to make hydrogen a cost-effective solution for achieving net-zero emissions. The Energy Hubs project, part of the broader Net Zero Technology Transition Programme, aims to support the scale-up of hydrogen production in Scotland to meet ambitious targets set by the government. Scotland's goal is to produce 25 GW of hydrogen by 2045 and become a leading exporter of renewable hydrogen. The Energy Hubs project envisions creating multi-GW capacity 'energy hubs' to facilitate large-scale hydrogen production. Modelling different scenarios is crucial for decision-making, as it helps in selecting optimal concepts, testing feasibility, and driving forward confidently. The system modelling conducted for Scotland's hydrogen energy system has provided insights into production capacity, cost analysis, export potential, infrastructure development, and the economic viability of energy hubs. By leveraging digital tools and modelling, the Energy Hubs project is moving towards surpassing the 25 GW target, showcasing Scotland's potential in the green hydrogen revolution.
