Green Hydrogen Collaboration in Delfzijl Chemical Park
Key Ideas
  • Evonik Industries AG partners with VoltH2 to establish a 50-MW electrolyzer for green hydrogen production at the Delfzijl chemical park, aiming for operations by 2027.
  • The collaboration ensures a sustainable transition for Evonik's hydrogen demand, complementing conventional production with green hydrogen sourced locally.
  • This initiative not only aligns with Evonik's sustainability goals but also sets a foundation for a broader hydrogen network at the industrial hub, showcasing the potential for large-scale emissions reductions.
  • By utilizing sustainable electricity and green hydrogen, this partnership exemplifies how industry players can work together to drive significant carbon emissions reductions and pave the way for a greener future.
Evonik Industries AG from Essen, Germany, has entered into a partnership with Dutch company VoltH2 to enhance green hydrogen production in the Delfzijl chemical park. The agreement involves VoltH2 setting up a 50-MW electrolyzer near Evonik's hydrogen peroxide plant, with operations slated to begin by the end of 2027. This project marks the inception of an industrial-scale green hydrogen water electrolysis plant in the North of the Netherlands. Evonik plans to source a considerable portion of its hydrogen requirements from this electrolyzer, supplementing its existing conventional hydrogen production. This strategic collaboration ensures a continuous hydrogen supply until green hydrogen production can meet demand. Additionally, VoltH2 will establish a filling station for tube trailers at Evonik's site, catering to its other customers' hydrogen needs. The joint effort not only advances Evonik's sustainability objectives but also lays the groundwork for a broader hydrogen infrastructure at the industrial site, showcasing the potential for emission reductions at scale. The commitment of both companies illustrates the feasibility of significant carbon emissions cuts through sustainable electricity and green hydrogen utilization. This initiative exemplifies successful collaboration in driving sustainable transformation and highlights the importance of partnerships across sectors for a greener future. Evonik's Active Oxygens business line has already made strides in reducing emissions, with plans to explore a large heat pump for steam generation and green hydrogen solutions at various sites.
