At the 2025 Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, PT Algatek Karbon Nusantara introduced its latest closed-loop microalgae photobioreactor technology. This innovation is specifically designed to address carbon emissions from diesel power plants in remote areas by capturing CO₂ and converting it into green hydrogen and oxygen. The photobioreactor has the capability to capture 40–60 percent of emitted carbon dioxide and convert it into oxygen and renewable hydrogen through photosynthesis and biophotolysis. The CEO of Algatek highlighted the potential of renewable energy from microalgae in Indonesia, emphasizing the circular economy aspect where biomass can be exported. Each photobioreactor unit, powered by less than 800 watts and potentially solar-compatible, can produce up to 4 kg of hydrogen per ton of microalgae annually under optimal lab conditions. Additionally, the system provides high-value biomass and biostimulants for industrial and agricultural use. Algatek's technology supports various Sustainable Development Goals, including clean energy, climate action, and responsible consumption. The modular and IoT-enabled system allows real-time monitoring of key variables, making it suitable for compact or remote installations. By utilizing microalgae strains, the system can convert CO₂ into biomass and oxygen efficiently while enhancing hydrogen production through metabolic engineering and sulfur deprivation.
