Kandla Port Authority to Lead India's Green Hydrogen Revolution
Key Ideas
- Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla, Gujarat, under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, is set to begin green hydrogen production by August, facilitating green ammonia and methanol production.
- Collaboration with industry partners like L&T and NTPC will support the establishment of Giga-scale plants and hydrogen-powered buses, aligning with the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
- Kandla Port aims to become a Methanol Bunker Point for the Rotterdam-Singapore corridor, positioning itself as a key player in world green shipping corridors.
- Despite surpassing cargo-handling targets for FY 2024-25 with 13% year-on-year growth, Kandla Port remains focused on maximizing operational efficiency without immediate capacity expansion.
The Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, Gujarat, Sushil Kumar Singh, announced plans to commence the production of green hydrogen by the end of August as part of India's National Green Hydrogen Mission. The initiative aims to establish an ecosystem for green hydrogen, green ammonia, and methanol production, with space allocated for Giga-scale plants in collaboration with industry leaders like L&T and NTPC. The port will also operate hydrogen-powered buses in place of diesel, contributing to the global target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
Singh highlighted Kandla's ambition to become a Methanol Bunker Point for the Rotterdam-Singapore corridor, positioning the port as a significant player in green shipping corridors worldwide. Despite exceeding cargo-handling targets for FY 2024-25 and achieving 13% year-on-year growth, the emphasis remains on optimizing existing infrastructure efficiently. Singh stressed that the port's success was attained without expanding capacity and reiterated the focus on unlocking the remaining potential of the current infrastructure, including offering 'berthing on arrival' for vessels.
