Sembcorp Industries, a Singapore-based energy and urban solutions provider, has announced plans to establish a green ammonia plant in Tamil Nadu, India. The project, with an investment of Rs 36,238 crore, was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin during the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave. The plant, to be located in Tuticorin on a 160-acre land, is expected to generate 1,511 employment opportunities. Sembcorp had previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu government during the Global Investors Meet held in January 2024. The green ammonia facility will produce 2 lakh metric tonne per annum for export to Japan, with the front-end engineering work already in progress. The initiative aims to contribute to India's energy transition targets and establish Tamil Nadu as a global hub for green hydrogen production. Vipul Tuli, the Chairman-South Asia and CEO of Sembcorp Industries-Hydrogen Business, expressed confidence in Tamil Nadu's potential for green hydrogen production, highlighting the state's renewable resources and conducive policies.
